A local insider guide to the finest wine experiences in and around Montepulciano — from private gardens to historic cellars
Wine tasting in Montepulciano has never been better — or more varied. The town and its surroundings offer a remarkable range of wine experiences, from the deeply traditional to the genuinely innovative. Here is the definitive insider guide for 2026.
Montepulciano sits at the crossroads of three of Tuscany's greatest wine zones — Vino Nobile DOCG to its south, Brunello di Montalcino to the west, and Chianti Classico to the north. Its own DOCG — Vino Nobile di Montepulciano — is produced from the extraordinary Prugnolo Gentile grape, a Sangiovese clone unique to this hilltop town.
The result: a concentration of wine knowledge, sommeliers, cellars and tasting opportunities that few Italian towns of this size can match.
1. Private Sunset Tasting at Eramo Secret Garden
The most exclusive option in Montepulciano. A private hilltop garden, panoramic views over the Val d'Orcia, a dedicated AIS sommelier and chef-prepared food pairings. Maximum 18 guests. Our Sunset Wine Tasting offers what no cantina visit can: complete intimacy, undivided attention and a setting that makes every sip more memorable. Book weeks in advance.
2. Cantina Poliziano — Classic Cellar Visit
The most visited producer in Montepulciano, and justifiably so. Poliziano offers a well-structured visit with a knowledgeable guide, from their modern production facility to the barrel room. Their Vino Nobile Asinone is one of the appellation's finest bottles.
3. Avignonesi — Biodynamic Pioneering
The most forward-thinking winery in the denomination. Biodynamic certification, extraordinary architecture at Valiano, and a Vin Santo that is considered by many the greatest in Italy. Book well in advance — this is a popular destination.
4. Salcheto — The Sustainable Choice
Carbon-neutral winery, solar panels, rainwater recovery and zero-pesticide viticulture. Their Vino Nobile is excellent and their mission is inspiring. A visit here offers a glimpse of what responsible viticulture looks like.
5. Tuscan Roots — Oil & Wine at Eramo
For something completely different, our Tuscan Roots experience pairs Tuscan extra virgin olive oil with local wines — a sensory journey through two of Tuscany's greatest products that very few experiences in the region offer.
